The Health Research & Education Foundation (HR&EF) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization established in 2001 to support the research and education programs of The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences.. The HR&EF gives corporations, business leaders, and scientists the opportunity to participate in The Hamner's vision for the 21st century.

Gifts to The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences through the Health Research & Education Foundation (HR&EF) will enhance both education and research on the human health effects of environmental exposure and will also support The Hamner's expansion into other areas of human health research. Contributions to the HR&EF are tax-deductible and can be in the form of endowments, planned gifts such as bequests, and gifts of cash, securities, and property.

Dr. Philip Abelson and Dr William Greenlee

The late Dr. Philip H. Abelson, former editor of the journal Science and a public member of the CIIT Board of Directors from 1985 to 2001, was the first private contributor to the HR&EF. He presented a gift of $25,000 to HR&EF Board Chairman Dr. William Greenlee at the public session of the 2001 CIIT Annual Meeting.

The Board of Directors of the American Industrial Health Council, Inc. (AIHC) made the first institutional contribution by designating to the HR&EF a significant portion of the funds remaining when AIHC dissolved in 2000. As the last President of AIHC, Dr. Hugh Campbell presented a gift of $130,000 to Dr. Greenlee at the 2002 CIIT Scientific Open House.
