Overview of Facilities and Resources

The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences occupies a main building of 110,000 square feet and a new laboratory annex of 28,000 square feet on a park-like, wooded site of 56 acres in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Under the visionary leadership of President Dr. William Greenlee, The Hamner is expanding its facilities and resources as it moves toward its goal of gaining worldwide recognition as a preeminent environmental and human health sciences research institute.

The creation of modern wet laboratory space is central to the research vision of The Hamner. The two-story laboratory annex, which was opened in April 2004, accommodates larger laboratory groups and state-of-the-art instrumentation. A 3000-square-foot, semimodular laboratory that can be reconfigured to meet changing needs was completed in 2002 by renovating existing space.

The Hamner has a 23,000-square-foot Animal Care Facility for the housing and experimental treatment of laboratory animals. A Genetically Engineered Mouse (GEM) Facility was created within the Animal Care Facility in 2002 so that animal care staff could provide specialized breeding services and management of mouse colonies for Hamner scientists. An Inhalation Exposure Facility, also located within the Animal Care Facility, has the capability of handling a wide variety of animal inhalation studies ranging from brief, nose-only exposures to long-term, whole-body exposures. A DNA Microarray Facility to support The Hamner's new Gene Expression Core and a Robotics Laboratory to support the new Functional Genomics Research Program were established in 2003.

The Hamner has developed extensive resources to support its research in environmental and human health sciences. Analytical Chemistry Services provides instrumentation and technical support, including tissue and compound analysis and the development of chemical analysis methodology. Other analytical services include electron microscopy, flow cytometry, and image analysis. The Necropsy and Histopathology group offers a wide range of services to Hamner scientists. The Information Technology group provides extensive computing resources for the production and dissemination of scientific information as well as consulting, planning, system design, and programming services. The Golberg Library & eResource Center is a specialized library with a large scientific journal collection and extensive electronic resources.
