Inhalation Exposure Facility

The Inhalation Exposure Facility at The Hamner has the capability of handling a wide variety of animal inhalation studies ranging from brief, nose-only exposures to long-term, whole-body exposures.

Inhalation Exposure

Equipment

The Inhalation Exposure Facility has 10 8-m3, 4 mobile 2-m3, and 50 mobile 1-m3 stainless-steel inhalation exposure chambers outfitted with the appropriate caging. The Facility also has 18 nose-only or single-animal, whole-body exposure systems of various configurations as well as a variety of other specialty inhalation chambers. Plethysmography equipment is available for studying exposure effects on individual animal breathing patterns.

Because the effects of inhaling nanoparticles have been hypothesized to differ from the effects of inhaling particles in the micrometer-size range, The Hamner has acquired equipment necessary to generate atmospheres of nanoparticles, monitor particle concentration, and determine size distribution.

Building Automation System

The Inhalation Exposure Facility has a building automation system that controls and logs temperature, relative humidity, and airflow in the facility and in individual exposure chambers. Automated monitoring and control of inhalation exposures allows experiments to be conducted 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
