Laboratory Annex

AnnexThe Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences completed construction of its 28,000-square-foot, two-story laboratory annex in March 2004, and the first floor was ready for occupancy on April 1. The annex is designed to facilitate interaction among laboratory groups. The building design also fosters The Hamner's systems-based approach to health safety assessment by facilitating the integration of quantitative modeling and biology. A new Computational Biology Facility is located adjacent to the laboratory annex.

The new annex accommodates larger laboratory groups and state-of-the-art instrumentation. The annex will enable The Hamner to double its efforts in environmental and human health sciences research and education over the next decade.

The first floor of 14,000 square feet has open laboratory space, specialty research rooms, and offices. The specialty research rooms include dedicated space for cell culture, cold rooms, molecular biology laboratories, a fluorescence microscopy area, a freezer room (-80 °C and -20 °C), and a common equipment room.

The second floor shell space is designed to accommodate fume hoods, biological safety cabinets, and all other laboratory functions. Conversion of the shell space to laboratories and offices will be undertaken as The Hamner continues to add scientific staff and can be completed in only a few months.
