Research
My research interests include the design and conduct of whole-animal toxicology studies used to support health risk assessments and the setting of exposure standards. These studies vary in frequency of dosing (acute, subacute, subchronic, and chronic), route of administration (inhalation, oral, dermal, peritoneal), endpoints (general toxicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, genotoxicity, and tumorgenicity), and species (mice, rats, guinea pigs). I am particularly interested in inhalation toxicity studies, because of the technical challenges in generating and characterizing different test material atmospheres (vapor, aerosol, particles). The generation and analysis of methyl isocyanate vapor for investigating responses in laboratory animals is an example. I've evaluated a wide range of test chemicals and products, most recently, alternatives of ozone-depleting substances. In a majority of cases, studies are conducted according to regulatory health effects testing guidelines and under good laboratory practice standards (GLPs). Following completion of a series of toxicity studies, I prepare health hazard reports that are of value to regulatory agencies in setting occupational exposure levels (OEL) or reference dose/concentration values (RfD/RfC).
